Born in a Basement, Refined Through Winters of Work

Dalsberg began during two long winters in my basement, where I experimented with minerals, pigments, and traditional binders, board after board, often late at night with John Butler in the background.
Some tests turned out beautifully.
Most kept the stove warm.

Those quiet winter hours shaped the Traditional Barn Paint we make today: honest, reliable, and rooted in real craft.

A Simple Objective

To reduce filling our brushes with synthetic products.

For centuries, wood was protected using natural minerals, plant-based ingredients, and oils — and it worked brilliantly. Homes and barns breathed, endured harsh weather, and lasted for generations without peeling or trapping moisture.

Let the wood breathe — we don’t keep a waterproof jacket on when it’s hot, so why make a house do it?

If traditional paint could respect the material and survive centuries of exposure, we can recreate it — and improve it — with today’s knowledge.
This is the goal of Dalsberg: a natural, breathable, durable Traditional Barn Paint that honors what worked for generations, enhanced by modern understanding, without losing its soul.

Where It Comes From — A Personal Heritage

I was born in Europe, in a place whose traditions are closely linked to the early Amish settlers. The oldest homes still have beams protected with natural mineral mixtures remarkably close to the formulas I use today. These beams aged with dignity.

Later, I lived in Northern Europe, where entire wooden houses have been safeguarded by mineral-and-oil paints for four centuries. Even after decades, faded pigments still protect the wood underneath, preserving structures for 150 years or more.

That heritage isn’t marketing — it’s what I grew up with.
It’s the foundation of Dalsberg: continuing the tradition of natural protection, refined for modern builders, homesteaders, and craftsmen.

What’s Inside — Tested, Balanced, Natural

Our Traditional Barn Paint blends heritage and a touch of science in each batch:

  • UV-stable mineral oxides for color and protection

  • Micronized starch activated by natural enzymes for smooth, lump-free consistency

  • Neutralized cellulose for structure and body

  • Stabilized caseinate for strong, long-lasting adhesion

  • Zinc oxide for durability

  • Naturally esterified oleoresins for extra stability

  • Linseed oil for deep penetration, reduced dusting,

No latex.
No plastic.
No synthetic binders.

Just a refined, dependable Traditional Barn Paint inspired by centuries-old practice.

A Finish That Ages Gracefully

Dalsberg paint doesn’t peel or crack. It wears naturally with the wood, creating a breathable matte finish that stays clean and honest. Linseed oil cancel or minimizes dusting and allows pigments to settle softly into the grain.

The paint doesn’t hide wood — it celebrates it.
