The paint transformed my big shed, which was supposed to be painted with acrylic paint... Phew. I recommend using a smaller brush if you have short arms.

Excellent quality, no lumps, easy to use. The result is much better with natural pigments and seems durable. No chalking under the hand.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What Are Dalsberg Paints?
Dalsberg paints are 100% natural, matte exterior wood paints designed to protect barns, cabins, sheds, and siding with a breathable, long-lasting matte finish.
Inspired by traditional mineral-based coatings, our formula uses pure earth and iron-oxide pigments never synthetic dyes so the color stays rich and stable over time. These mineral pigments also create the deep, authentic look that homeowners can’t get from acrylic barn paints or latex stains.
Made with simple, non-toxic natural ingredients, each batch is crafted with precise heat processing to ensure a smooth, lump-free texture and adhesion. This controlled process gives Dalsberg paints far more consistency and durability than any homemade recipe.
The result: a true natural barn paint that penetrates the wood, lets it breathe, and delivers a beautifully matte, highly protective finish built for harsh outdoor conditions.
2. Dalsberg natural paint for wood
It performs best on raw exterior wood (ideal for barns, sheds, siding, fences) and also adheres very well to planed wood and even pressure-treated wood once it has weathered and can absorb some of the paint.
3. How Do I Apply Dalsberg Natural Paint?
For best results, apply Dalsberg natural barn paint with a wide, soft brush (barn brush, limewash brush, or sash brush).
Avoid rollers. A sprayer can be used with 10% dilution, but expect to lose a lot of paint around you.
No primer is needed.
Apply one generous coat only. The wood should absorb the paint in a single pass—this is how breathable, mineral-based coatings work.
Adding multiple coats does not improve the color or protection. It can lead to chalking, uneven buildup, or product waste over time.
A single, rich coat is all you need.
4. Do I Need to Prepare the Wood Before Applying the Paint?
Preparation is minimal.
For raw or weathered wood, simply brush off dust and loose fibers — no sanding and no primer required.
If the surface has been previously coated with synthetic or film-forming paint (latex, acrylic, oil-based), you’ll need to remove the old boring finish.
Dalsberg natural barn paint must penetrate the wood to bond properly, and it cannot absorb through a plastic coating.
Once the surface is clean and able to absorb, you’re ready to paint.
5. How Long Does the Paint Last?
In most North American climates, Dalsberg natural barn paint protects and enhances exterior wood for about 8–10 years.
Because it penetrates the surface and uses mineral pigments, the wood retains protection even as the color ages gracefully over time.
Maintenance is extremely simple: no sanding, no stripping, no chemicals.
When it's time to refresh the coating, simply brush off the old layer and apply a new one. The new layer adheres directly to the wood and the old layer.
This low-maintenance cycle is one of the advantages of a breathable, natural exterior wood paint compared to acrylic stains or latex paints.
6. Does the Paint Peel?
Dalsberg natural paint does not flake. Unlike conventional paints, it does not form a plastic film that traps moisture. The wood remains breathable and water can escape naturally, preventing blistering, cracking, and flaking.
Our modern formula has been improved to eliminate the flaws of older recipes. Powdery residue—once common with traditional paints—has been virtually eliminated thanks to our new generation of natural ingredients. Over time, a very slight powdery film may appear only when the surface is rubbed vigorously with the hand, as with many breathable mineral paints: this is normal and harmless.
To further increase the hardness and durability of the surface, you can add 5 to 10% boiled linseed oil (available at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.). This optimizes polymerization and strengthens the mineral film, while maintaining the breathability of the wood.
7. Does the Wood Texture Remain Visible?
Yes. One of the key advantages of Dalsberg natural barn paint is that it keeps the wood’s texture fully visible — the grain, knots, and natural variations all show through.
There’s no plastic film and no latex-like effect.
You get a deep, matte, breathable finish that enhances the wood instead of hiding it.
8. Why Add Boiled Linseed Oil?
Only boiled linseed oil effectively polymerizes the paint mixture. Its viscosity allows it to deeply penetrate the wood, enhancing adhesion and durability. It also ensures a fast drying time—typically 1 to 3 hours—making it ideal for natural exterior wood paint applications and achieving a smooth, long-lasting finish.
9. Can I Use This Paint Indoors?
This paint is primarily designed for exterior wood surfaces and untreated lumber. However, by adding 7–10% boiled linseed oil, it can also be used on interior woodwork.
What Is Natural Barn Paint?
Natural barn paint is more than just a finish—it’s a traditional, living material that protects and enhances the natural beauty of wood. Available in deep, matte shades like bark brown, mineral gray, deep black, and earthy red, it combines aesthetic charm with long-lasting performance. Made from natural real mineral pigments, micronized starch, neutralized cellulose, caséin, and linseed oil binder, it penetrates the wood, highlighting its grain and giving a timeless, sophisticated look.
A Natural and Eco-Friendly Paint
Unlike acrylic or synthetic paints, natural barn paint doesn’t form a sealed film. It penetrates and protects the wood while letting it breathe, ensuring a breathable, durable coating. Resistant to UV, rain, and frost, it doesn’t peel and can be refreshed easily without sanding.
Versatile and Easy to Maintain
Our natural barn paint can be applied on raw wood. Because it doesn’t clog pores, it adapts to all porous and breathable surfaces. After several years, a simple brushing restores its color and protection effortlessly.
A Traditional Paint for Modern Projects
While based on centuries-old techniques, this paint is ideal for contemporary exterior projects: siding, garden sheds, barns, gates, or rustic woodwork. It’s both a rustic and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic paints that are often more expensive and less durable (to achieve a result that will retain water in the wood).
Ready-to-Use or DIY Mix
Our paints are available as powder to mix yourself or in liquid form, ready to use. Each mix contains precise dosages for a stable texture and uniform color, delivering professional-quality natural barn paint with minimal effort.
The Truth About DIY Recipes
Many online recipes for paints exist, but a durable natural barn paint requires exact heating and timing for each ingredient. Homemade versions often result in unstable color and weak adhesion after 2 or 3 years. Dalsberg paints guarantee a consistent, robust, and long-lasting finish through controlled production methods.
An Authentic and Timeless Touch
Choosing natural barn paint means prioritizing authenticity over artificial shine. Matte shades—bark brown, mineral gray, deep black, earthy red—create a natural patina and harmony with the environment.
Our Commitment
At Dalsberg, we don’t sell a trend—we preserve a craft. Our mission is to make natural, durable, and breathable wood paint accessible, staying true to the spirit of living materials. Painting protects. Painting naturally prolongs the life of your wood.
